Elden Ring is an open-world action RPG developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, the game features worldbuilding contributed by fantasy novelist George R. R. Martin. Players assume the role of a Tarnished, an exile summoned back to the Lands Between to claim the Great Runes and become the Elden Lord.
The game combines third-person melee combat, magic spells, stealth mechanics, and horse riding with open-ended character progression. Players can customize their character with diverse weapons, armor, sorceries, incantations, and Ashes of War skills, allowing for tailored combat strategies against challenging adversaries and bosses.
The central storyline revolves around the shattering of the Elden Ring and the subsequent war known as The Shattering. Players travel across diverse regions including Limgrave, Liurnia, and Caelid, exploring sprawling landscapes, subterranean dungeons, and intricate legacy castles to defeat corrupt demigods holding the shards of the Elden Ring.
Elden Ring originally launched worldwide for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S in February 2022. The game later received a major critically acclaimed expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, in June 2024.
